PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

What is PDT?

In photodynamic therapy (PDT) a chemical reaction activated by a light energy (laser) is used to selectively destroy tissue. PDT's main indication is the treatment of precancerous lesions.

How does Photodynamic therapy (PDT) work?

A chemical, Levulan, is applied to the skin and incubated for one-two hours. Levulan is converted to a potent photosensitizer. Illumination with a high-intensity light or laser causes an oxidation reaction in the treated skin area. Precancerous lesions and oil glands absorb Levulan this results in targeted therapy to those structures.

What types of conditions can be treated with PDT?

Clinical benefits of PDT in treating actinic keratoses is well documented. PDT may also treat certain skin cancers. PDT is helpful for photorejuvenation, acne, sebaceous hyperplasia and brown spots (sun spots).

How does PDT treat acne?

Photodynamic therapy improves acne by decreasing the bacteria on the skin and shrinking the oil glands.

What parts of the body may be treated with PDT?

Any part of the skin may be treated with PDT. Many patients start with the face, neck and chest. This is also a wonderful treatment for arms and legs.
