HAIR TRANSPLANTATION
Hair transplantation surgery is performed to move growing hair to areas that no longer have hair. Baldness is the result of
several factors including hormones and
genetics. The goal of hair transplantation
is to provide a more youthful appearing
hairline.
In order to accomplish this goal, hair is
relocated from the back and sides of the
scalp. Hair from these areas retains the
ability to produce visible hairs long after
other areas can't. When placed into the
skin at the front of the scalp,
transplanted hairs continue to grow.
Hair transplantation has been performed
using various techniques over the years.
Early efforts utilized plugs taken from the
back of the scalp and moved to the front.
While these plugs continued to grow, they
had the disadvantage of looking like a
doll's head. Newer techniques allow Dr.
Kenneth Beer to create a more natural
hairline that will be less noticeable and
more esthetically pleasing. The techniques
of using smaller pieces of hair are known
as micro and mini grafting.
Mini grafts are small pieces of hair that
contain between three and eight hairs. They
are used to provide intermediate density to
recipient areas. Micro grafts are smaller
than mini grafts and contain between one
and three hairs. They are used to provide a
more natural transition between the
transplanted areas and the scalp. Dr.
Kenneth Beer strives to follow nature's
example by using micro and mini grafts.
Commonly Asked Questions:
1) Who is a good candidate for hair
transplantation?
The answer is that most men who have
experienced significant hair loss and are
between the ages of 23 and 65 are good
candidates. Candidates must have enough
hair in a donor area to supply hair for the
recipient area. The color and density of
your hair are also important determinates.
These factors, as well as other
considerations, will be discussed with you
during your consultation. There are
limitations to what can be accomplished
with any type of hair restoration surgery
and each patient is encouraged to discuss
his objectives with Dr. Kenneth Beer.
2) Are there risks associated with
hair transplantation surgery?
Any type of surgery has some element of
risk associated with it and hair
transplantation is no exception. The risks
associated with this type of surgery
include scarring, bleeding and infection
and Dr. Kenneth Beer goes to great lengths
to minimize these risks. In addition, there
is the risk that the grafts do not grow
after the move, that small bumps form
around the graft and that future hair loss
mandates repeated hair transplants.
3) Does the procedure
hurt?
Dr. Kenneth Beer uses various medications
to minimize the discomfort from the
procedure. These medications include local
anesthetic and medication to make the
patient drowsy.
4) How much does the procedure cost
and will my insurance pay?
The cost of the procedure depends on the
extent of the restoration. While some
patients prefer a gradual restoration
others prefer to have a great deal done in
each session. The amount of restoration per
session dictates the cost of each session.
Since this is cosmetic surgery, no
insurance pays for hair restoration.
5) How long will I be out of
work?
Again, this depend on the extent of the
work done. Most patients can return to work
in 2-3 days.
Every patient has his own questions
